Textbook: To be supplied by the teacher (Exploring the Building Blocks of Science)

Summary: In this class, students will continue their formal study of science through a physical science course focused on our planet.  Students will continue to develop skills in designing and executing experiments, using the scientific method, and writing lab reports.  Topics of study include atoms  and molecules, air, water, Earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere, weather, motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, electromagnetism, atomic forces, waves, sound, light, and astronomy.

Investigate pure substances and mixtures, solutions, separating mixtures, organic chemistry (the chemistry of carbon), polymers, biological polymers including amino acids, DNA, and RNA. Study plant cells and the classification of plants, the chemistry of photosynthesis, plant structure and growth, and plant reproduction. Explore chemical energy, electrostatics, electrodynamics, and electromagnetics. Examine Earth as a system and Earth’s hydrosphere, biosphere, and magnetosphere, plus different types of galaxies, the Milky Way, red giants, white dwarfs, and other objects in space.

Recommend completing prior to taking high school level sciences: Biology, Marine Biology & Chemistry.
