This study begins with the period following the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West and the fascinating and often overlooked developments and tensions between the existing Roman Empire of the East and developments in the West that led to the eventual Great Schism and international events including the First Crusade, the Fourth Crusade (Siege of Constantinople) and how some of the challenges in our world today is the result.  The focus of this class involves the social history of this period including music, art, fashion, the impact of regional diets, and technological breakthroughs.

Along with the class text, supplementary materials for this class are provided by the instructor, including primary sources for research.  The class experience includes discussions and the use of short videos by well-known historians and academic sources for all of the topics.  The coursework includes open-book quizzes, a midterm paper, and a final exam.
