In this course, we will dive into the Golden Age of the mystery novel! We will examine the history and development of this genre, the “rules” set down about how they should be written, and the various subgenres within mystery. We will read novels, short stories, and dramas from the beginnings of the mystery novel (about the mid-1800s) through the Golden Age of mystery (approximately 1920 to 1940). Authors covered include but are not limited to, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Rex Stout, Margery Allingham, and G.K. Chesterton.
