Text: Become All Flame: Lent with African Saints
Summary: In this course, students will discover how the Christian faith came to Egypt, Ethiopia, North Africa, and the Nubian kingdoms. There will be a special focus on influential saints and the desert fathers.
We will explore how Christianity developed on the African continent from the first to the seventh century. Major events, such as the Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity and the Fourth Ecumenical Council, will be discussed. We will also identify the role of pivotal theologians and saints like Tertullian, Athanasius, and the Desert Fathers.
The claim that Christianity is a “white man’s religion’ sometimes hinders Orthodox evangelism with African Americans. The purpose of this class is to discover historical and spiritual truths to help overcome this distortion.
This course is for 8th graders and High Schoolers
