Students will become familiar with the Founding Documents of the United States, including the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, as well as the Federalist Papers & Non-Federalist Papers. They will learn how American Government was conceived, developed, and works at a practical level. What are the three branches of government and what is the separation of powers. The Impact of American government structure and operation on our daily lives and rest of the world. This course is designed to provide students with some basic critical thinking skills as well as prepare students for essential information needed to become good citizens while emphasizing the mind of the Orthodox Church.
Students will examine a brief history of the study economics historically and in the life of the Church as well as understand fundamentals such as Scarcity, Supply and Demand, Markets and Trade, how Government policy helps or hurts. In addition, they will study major economic systems, and principle of Micro and Macroeconomics.  This will be a highly interactive class that will have students examining economic principles and systems in the historic and modern political life of America and their impact internationally.
In each class there will be a bit of reading and individual research expected.

Materials & textbooks

  1. For Civics: US Constitution and Bill of Rights, with other founding documents.
  2. For Economics: “Economics, Principles and Practices, by Clayton
    Other texts are in the public domain, students will be responsible for acquiring copies of founding documents. There will be handouts and links to documents and videos provided.
    Students will be required to read local newspapers to discuss current political issues throughout the class.

This class will be very interactive with a strong emphasis on individual participation in discussions and topic research.
